This Cinco de Mayo, Opportunities to Help Clean up the Hudson River

Earth Day may have just passed, but as the weather warms, residents of the New York-New Jersey area are encouraged to register for an ambitious volunteer cleanup of the Hudson River watershed. From Saratoga Springs in the Adirondacks to the river’s mouth in New York City, the Hudson Riverkeeper will be holding its annual Riverkeeper Sweep Saturday, May 5.

The Riverkeeper Sweep enlists volunteers to beautify the Hudson by picking up trash and litter in the Hudson as well as its tributaries. The Riverkeeper is asking volunteers to arrive with tough boots and pants capable of staying dry, as they will need to wade into the water to pick up as much trash as possible. Volunteers need to sign up in order to ensure they will receive the materials needed for cleanup.

The program will be a great opportunity for citizens of all ages to enjoy hopefully warm weather keeping one of America’s most treasured waterways clean. Many smaller cleanups will be organized by local authorities, such as the Orange County Water Authority for sites like the Monhagen Brook in Middletown.

Interested residents can learn more at https://www.riverkeeper.org/news-events/events/rvk-events/save-date-2018-riverkeeper-sweep/. The website can direct volunteers to their nearest cleanup project; different projects have different organizations and leaders to contact. Volunteers can also text 21333 to get more information.
